Living Meditation v1

A charitable mobile app—branding exploration, UX research, and the first end-to-end experience for accessible Buddhist meditation.

Overview

I conceived and led this meditation app from the ground up: every screen, the overall experience architecture, content curation, and coordination of volunteers who helped bring it to life.

The vision was simple but ambitious—a mobile app that helps people navigate daily challenges through meditation on their own terms. Free, intuitive, and without ads or subscription barriers.

Version 1 established the foundation: a branding study, initial visuals, and UX research that validated the direction. This was entirely a charitable project.

Early brand exploration and motion studies that set the tone for version 1.

Establishing the brand

Positioning, audience, and strategic intent that framed version 1.

What is Living Meditation

A mobile app created to help people cope with daily struggles through meditation on their own terms—addressing stress, anxiety, and related difficulties with accessible, structured guidance.

Product

Meditation cards

The core library is organised into visually distinct cards—each representing a curated category such as Kindness, Clarity, Relaxation, or Listening, with the number of sessions clearly shown.

Soft illustrations, calming colours, and clear hierarchy turn a large collection into something approachable and easy to browse.

What was made for this project

Branding

Persona studies, benchmarking, and a visual identity system built from research.

UX research

Prototypes and usability tests through beta to validate flows before launch.

Content curation

Material drawn from books, podcasts, and video to create a rich meditation library.

Design system

Reusable components and patterns for consistent interfaces across the product.

Outcome

What this version unlocked

This project laid the groundwork for version 2, which launched in October 2025. For the Buddhist tradition, it opened the door to a modern, centralised hub for meditation practice.

New meditations were recorded specifically for the product, adding enormous value—and everything was built to provide qualified, accessible content for anyone, completely free and without ads.

Stakeholders

Is there a market for this app?

Being freely available, the app has the potential to reach thousands of users worldwide. Statistics show sustained growth in interest for meditation apps in recent years.

Reflection

Contributing to a truly meaningful project was deeply gratifying—and personally, I gained new skills coordinating volunteers and designing a product I wholeheartedly believe in.

Many thanks to the Kadampa Community volunteers, especially Carl—the first developer to get involved—and Lotus, Michael, Christian, Mark, and Kelsang Drolkyi. It has been a pleasure working with you all.
